"The debut solo studio album by the acclaimed NYC-based hip-hop producer and beatmaker Blockhead originally released in 2004. This is a record that establishes its own emotional space and holds it from start to finish, establishing Blockhead as a major player in the so-called trip-hop movement alongside the likes of DJ Shadow, RJD2, DJ Krush and Kid Koala. The 20th anniversary edition includes 2 bonus discs featuring classic Aesop Rock instrumentals and never-before-released 'Lost Files' from 99-03." - Ninja Tune
Original Lab review:
After cutting his teeth producing Aesop Rock and the Party Fun Action Committee, new signee delivers 14 tracks of instrumental work on this challenging, but highly listenable debut. Those familiar with his work will know that he mixes together jazz, rock, and soundtrack samples with live guitar/violin to create a sound thats like a dark indy score, kind of like a hip-hop Jon Brion. Im really enjoying this album, due in a large part to Blockheads strong sense of composition and overall cohesiveness of sound, especially evident on the first single Insomniac Olympics and Road Rage Breakdown. However, the centerpiece is definitely the three-part Triptych, which comes together in a WDYSLL sort of way (ed.note: thats dork-speak for a reference). Quality listening throughout, spread over double vinyl. (ed.note: lot of haters of this album, but most feedback Ive gotten is thumbs up).
